Air Niugini orders B787s
On 5 June 2023, Boeing announced that it reached a deal with Air Niugini for the Dreamliner. In total, the airline has placed an order for two B787-8s, which it will use to replace its two ageing B767-300ERs that are on average 27 years old. No delivery timeline has been communicated by the manufacturer or the airline.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time Air Niugini ordered the Dreamliner as it placed an order for two -8s back in 2007. Later, this order was converted into an order for four B737-8s, and is now, according to CH-Aviation, converted back into an order for the B787.
Air Niugini utilizes its current two widebodies from Port Moresby to mainly Airai, Brisbane, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
In August 2022, Scramble reported that the airline was planning to renew its fleet, which further consists of one B737-800, one DHC-8-300, two DHC-8-400s, six Fokker 70s, and seven Fokker 100s. With the widebody decision now taken, it's expected Air Niugini will also soon announce it's choice to replace its other jets. For this it's looking at the Airbus A220, A320neo, B737MAX and Embraer E2s.
