American Airlines and Southwest Airlines firm MAX-options
Both American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have announced in their financial updates that they are planning or have firmed options on MAXs with Boeing.
Southwest Airlines has in total firmed 36 options on the MAX, of which seven have already been booked last year. The low-cost carrier has now ordered a total of 271 B737-7s and 135 B737-8s. It also has options on 226 more. The majority of the aircraft will be delivered between 2022 and 2026 and most of these will be B737-7s. Southwest has also said it expects to firm more options this year. Currently, it has taken delivery of 69 MAXs, all B737-8s.
American Airlines has announced it has firmed 30 options for the B737-8 into firm orders. Fifteen will of these will be delivered in 2023, the other fifteen a year later. In total, the airline has now placed firm orders for 130 B737-8s. So far, American has welcomed 42 B737-8s into the fleet. At the same time of announcing the firming of the MAXs, the airline has also informed everybody that they are deferring the delivery of several B787-9s it has on order until 2023-2027.
