Cargolux loses part of landing gear
On 14 May 2013, a Cargolux Jumbo Jet (LX-OCV, 29731) was climbing out of Luxembourg's runway 06 (to operate flight CV6857 to Chicago-O'Hare International Airport (IL) when the crew stopped the climb at FL100 (10,000ft) due to being unable to retract the landing gear.
The aircraft returned to Luxembourg for a landing on runway 06 at 19:00 hours local time, about fifty minutes after departure. Since they took off with fuel for the long flight, they needed to burn some excess fuel in order to avoid an overweight landing.
Upon touchdown the right hand centre gear wheel bogey separated, which came to rest in front of the Cargolux hangar. The Queen of the Skies rolled out without further incident and blocked the runway. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The airline reported the aircraft was unable to retract its landing gear, as result it was forced to dump fuel for the return to Luxembourg. On landing the right body landing gear detached from the aircraft. The aircraft came to a controlled stop, there were no injuries.
Given the damage to the Boeing the single runway 06/24 at Luxembourg was closed for the remainder of the evening, forcing cancellations of other flights. The first departure was around 03:00 hours in the morning of 15 May, when a Cargolux-flight left for Baku, Azerbaijan.
