On 14 September 2023, a Learjet 45 of VSR Ventures (VT-DBL, msn 45-404) crash-landed around 17:04 hours local time, after an attempted landing on runway 27 at Mumbai-Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, India.
Photo and video footage of the accident show that at least one wing separated in the impact sequence, causing a localised fire. The fuselage broke and the aircraft came to a stop next to the runway, at taxiway W(hiskey). There were six passengers and two crew members on board, all of whom received injuries but managed to survive the impact.
All operations of the airport were shut down for over an hour after which the runway opened for operations at 18:47.
The unfortunate Lear had left Visakhapatnam International Airport earlier in the afternoon.
At the time of landing weather was very poor, with heavy rainshowers, poor visibiity (less than one kilometre) and low clouds. On video footage the Learjet is seen coming in on a steep decent and in a slight right bank. The reason for this unusual attitude is under investigation, but the poor weather may have been a factor.
