Lufthansa Group launches City Airlines

The Lufthansa Group announced on 17 March 2023 that it has established a new subsidiary. The company is called City Airlines and will call Munich its home. The plan is to launch flights by mid-2023 with an unspecified number of Airbus A319s that will be transferred over from Lufthansa.

From Munich, the new subsidiary is planning to focus on short- and medium routes in Europe. Recruitment for new staff is currently underway.

City Airlines is the Group's latest attempt to lower its costs by establishing subsidiaries that operate with their own Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) and crews with its own pay structure. It copies the work Lufthansa has done with Lufthansa CityLine, which is currently operating twelve A319s, two A320s, two A321P2Fs, 28 CRJ900s, and seven ERJ190s.
