Lufthansa mulls B787s for Austrian

According to AeroTelegraph, the Lufthansa Group is considering replacing Austrian Airlines' current long-haul fleet with new Boeing B787s. The Dreamliners might come from an additional order for the type as the Group is in negotiations with Boeing about new aircraft as part of its compensation for the delay of the new B777-9s. The CEO of Lufthansa Group has said that more aircraft are better than money when it comes to compensation.

Austrian Airlines' long-haul fleet consists of three B767-300ERs and six B777-200ERs, which are all more than 22 years old and becoming more costly to maintain. The idea is to replace both types with the B787, simplifying the airline's fleet, which further is made-up by 29 Airbus A320s, two A320neos, six A321s, and seventeen ERJ195s.

The Lufthansa Group took delivery of its first two B787-9s in August and October 2022, both operated by Lufthansa. It has 28 more B787-9s on order.
