Lufthansa takes delivery of first 787-9
On 30 August 2022, the first Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner arrived at its new home base Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft, D-ABPA (62730) is named “Berlin”, and is the first of 32 firm Lufthansa orders for the B787-9.
It belongs to a group of five B787-9s Lufthansa ordered in May 2021, and that were already manufactured by then. The five D-ABPA, (62730), D-ABPB (62734), D-ABPC (62733), D-ABPD (62729) and D-ABPE (62143) were originally ordered by and built for Hainan Airlines, but due to financial troubles not taken up by the Chinese airline.
It is interesting to note that these first five 787-9s for Lufthansa will be powered by General Electric GEnx engines, while the other 27 will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engine.
D-ABPA’s interior will be refurbished in Lufthansa's colours and design over the coming weeks. It will, initially, start flying domestically within Germany out of Frankfurt for training purposes. The first intercontinental destination of the Lufthansa Dreamliner is scheduled for later this year and will be to Toronto.
