Mango Airlines grounded

Mango Airlines has been forced to cease all operations after the Airports Company South Africa banned the airline from using its airports due to unpaid passenger service charges, landing and parking fees. The situation at Mango was already dire as money was running out very quickly.

Last week, the board of the airline already planned to ground the airline and seek bankruptcy protection as of 1 May as funding by the government was not forthcoming. Mango, which is the low-cost subsidiary of South African Airways, will now have to wait and see what the government will decide on how to revive the national airline and with that Mango as well.

Mango was launched in 2006 and, although being 100% owned by South African Airways, operates as an independent carrier. It currently has a fleet of fourteen B737-800s. It served eighteen destinations out of its bases at Johannesburg and Cape Town.
