New Caledonian carriers in trouble
The main carriers of New Caledonia are all sounding the alarm bells regarding their financial situation and survival. Due to the recent civil unrest in the country, the carriers are facing a sharp decrease in passenger numbers.
Aircalin, the flag carrier, has announced it has seen its passenger numbers drop with 50%, forcing the airline to put up to 40% of its staff on partial unemployment. It's also suspending operations to Melbourne and Tokyo-Narita.
The other main airline of New Caledonia, Air Caledonie, is seeing 70% less passengers and has been forced to reduce its staff with 33%. It's also considering to lease-out some of its aircraft to increase revenue.
As a result of the difficulties, the main airlines of the country, Aircalin, Air Caledonie and Air Loyauté are considering to merge to increase efficiencies.
Today, Aircalin's fleet consists of two Airbus A320neos (one parked in Kuala Lumpur) and two A330-900s. Air Caledonie operates four ATR72-600s, while Air Loyauté is flying with two DHC-6s (one parked at Nouméa).
