Norwegian orders B737MAXs
On 30 May 2022, Norwegian announced it has reached a principle agreement with Boeing in which the airline is set to place a firm order for 50 B737-8s. The agreement also includes options on another 30 B737MAXs. The 50 new Boeings will be delivered between 2025 and 2028 and will replace B737-800s coming off leases.
With this agreement, Boeing and Norwegian also settled the dispute the companies had due to the delayed deliveries of B787s and MAXs. Although Norwegian had officially cancelled their previous order for the B737MAX, Boeing never removed the remaining 83 B737-8s on order from its orderbook. This means, this order for 50 B737-8s is by all means a restructuring of Norwegian's original order.
Today, Norwegian's fleet consists of 64 B737-800s and three B737-8s, of which the large majority is leased. By acquiring the aircraft now themselves, the airline hopes to lower its all-in costs and increase its financial position. As the B737-8s are fourteen percent more more fuel-efficient compared to the B737-800, the new MAXs will also help Norwegian's goal to have 45% less emissions by 2030.
