On 7 October 2020, Boom Supersonic rolled-out the world's first privately developed supersonic jet, the XB-1. The XB-1 is Boom's real-life technology demonstrator which it will use as part of the development of their planned supersonic passenger-jet, the Overture.
The XB-1 is over 21 m long and has three General Electric J85-15 engines. It will now undergo extensive ground testing at Boom's Denver-plant, before moving to Mojave (CA) for its first flight, which is scheduled for early next year.
During the test-flying programme of the XB-1, Boom is planning to finalize the engine-selection for the Overture as well as the windtunnel-tests. Boom is planning to roll-out the Overture in 2025 and certified by 2029, using up to five test aircraft.
The Overture will feature a premium cabin configuration and will be able to carry up to 55 passengers over 8,300 km. Boom is working with Japan Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic on the project, as well as the USAF which is interested in the Overture as a fast executive aircraft. At this moment the company has logged 30 pre-orders for the Overture.
