Super Puma crash in California
An Aérospatiale Super Puma of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department (AS332L1 N950SG, msn 9007) impacted wooded terrain in the Angeles National Forest, near San Gabriel Dam, during a landing attempt north of Azusa (CA), on 19 March 2022.
The Air Rescue 5 helicopter went down near Highway 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) and East Fork Road. It departed Huntington Hospital Heliport at 16:24 hours local time, made an intermediate stop at Barley Flats Helipad (Sheriff air rescue station) at 16:32, then departed at 16:36.
It was traveling to a vehicle collision scene, leaving five deputies and a civilian with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The chopper experienced some kind of malfunction before suffering a “hard landing and rollover” in a small turnout just a few feet from a 200-foot drop into the reservoir.
