United set to announce large B787-order

United Airlines will, on 13 December 2022, announce a large order for the Boeing B787. According to various sources, it's ordering up to 100 Dreamliners, making it the largest order for the type ever. A special ceremony is planned at Boeing's South Caroline Welcome Center, inviting journalist to "a historic announcement".

The airline has been having discussions with both Airbus and Boeing for its widebody-aircraft need and the CEO has been telling he will either order 100 A350s or 100 B787s. The selection of the Dreamliner doesn't bode well for the 45 Airbus A350-900s the airline has on order and it's expected that these will be cancelled or converted to a different type like the A321neo.

United Airlines will use the new Dreamliners to replace its fleet of 53 Boeing B767s, consisting of 37 Boeing B767-300ERs and sixteen B767-400ERs, and 96 older B777s, which consists of nineteen B777-200s and 55 B777-200ERs.
