The Imperial War Museum at Duxford has cancelled its Battle of Britain Proms and Air Show 2020,
which had been due to take place from September 18-20.

The museum said it was “devastated”
to make the decision,
but did so for the safety of visitors and staff amid rising cases of the coronavirus.

It follows new government restrictions that come into force from Monday
that mean groups of more than six people cannot gather socially.
The government also halved capacity at sporting events to 1,000 people.

A statement from IWM Duxford read:
“It is with great sadness that I have to let you know
that the decision has been taken
to cancel the Duxford Battle of Britain Proms and 80th Anniversary Battle of Britain Air Show 2020.

“I know you were looking forward to what was set to be a brilliant weekend,
but we must prioritise the safety of visitors, staff and the local community
in this rapidly changing climate.

Coronavirus infection rates are doubling every seven to eight days in England,
new findings have shown.

The study from Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI
estimates that 13 people per 10,000 were infected in England between August 22 and September 7,
compared to four people per 10,000 between July 24 and August 11.

The R number - indicating how many people on average a person with the virus is infecting - is estimated to be 1.7.
It needs to be below one to prevent the virus spreading.
