Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea,
has received government approval
to order eleven A220-100 and -300 aircraft from Airbus.

From 2025, the aircraft will replace seven Fokker 100s and six smaller F70s.

Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby)
has chosen the Airbus A220 over the E195-E2 from Embraer
to spearhead its regional jet replacement program,
according to William Duma, Papua New Guinea's Minister for State-Owned Enterprises.

The minister told media in Port Moresby this week
that the country's prime minister and National Executive Council had approved the choice.

The airline has always been a loyal Fokker customer,
but the aircraft are getting old and must be replaced by more modern equipment: the Airbus A220.

Since the start of the company, Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea, has been using Fokker aircraft.
First the Fokker F.27 Friendship and F.28 Fellowship were deployed, later the Fokker 70 and 100.

"The Fokkers have done a great job for the last 25 years, but it's time to replace them,"
said Air Niugini CEO Gary Seddon.

Air Niugini acting chief Gary Seddon says the potential order is the first time the carrier has committed to new regional jets.

He adds: “We are moving from analogue to digital. The Fokker jet aircraft have done their part for the last 25 years and it’s time to replace them with a game changer aircraft.”

the Port Moresby-based carrier has eight in-service Fokker jets, comprising four Fokker 100s and four Fokker 70s. Another five Fokker aircraft are in storage.
