The aircraft whose retirement is being speeded up are 60 MD10s and 16 A310s.
FedEx announced in March that it planned to buy 14 Boeing 757 aircraft from United Airlines for conversion to freight use,
and that it was taking options on a further 16.
At the end of February FedEx operated 660 aircraft, 368 of them jets.
