Wiesbaden Tag der Offenen Tür 29-06-08

Post by FISHER01 »

C-17A the only modern airplane?

Post by Le Addeur noir »

From the German text it states there will be a C-17A at this event, and it would appear little or nothing else of a modern military nature.

Most likely to be 437 AW C-17A 96-0008 'Spirit of Berlin'.

Now I wonder where you get THAT impression: "Tag der Offenen Tür" in German means Open Door... celebrating 60 years of the Berlin airbridge to lift the Berlin Blockade by the Soviets in 1948 is a big thing you don't do on a families' day.

The message also indicates that for once a fly-in is possible (now wouldn't that be a nice way to visit Wiesbaden  ); that too would seem out of place for a Families'Day, in which family and relatives of base personnel are the only guests!

Finally, the message also states that it is possible to view modern US military aircraft (plural, so that would suggest more than one!)

Sounds like an Open Day to me! "unfortunately", I will be at Landivisiau then but for those of you trying your luck there or those of you that have more information, keep us posted!

Yes, it's an Open Day on the 29th June.

On the 26th there will be a non-public ceremony on this airfield including a flight of a DC-3 or DC-4 from Wiesbaden to Berlin with a stop in Frankfurt.

Guests are invited to view vintage and modern aircraft displays, climb into World War II trucks and armored vehicles, strap into the legendary C-130 Hercules airlifter, enjoy Berlin Airlift reenactments, take flight on a helicopter ride, and more directly on the airfield. The U.S. Air Force’s premier airlifter, the C-17 Globemaster III, will also make its first public Wiesbaden debut. Food and Berlin Airlift memorabilia will also be for sale, including limited edition coins and mini-handkerchief parachutes

On their website they announce a DC-2 and a Constellation using a picture of N749NL. Can this be true?

For the photographers among us....... I guess the following says it all about the photo-opportunities:
Local newspapers mention the possibility of having your pictures taken in the cockpit of a C-130 or C-17.

By the way, quote from the newspaper (also mentioned on the official Wiesbaden AB website):
:blabla: "die C-17 Globemaster III wird in Erbenheim ihr öffentliches Debüt geben (the C-17 Globemaster III will give its public debut in Erbenheim)".
Conclusion: the C-17's we saw at previous airshows were actually mock-ups.

Regards,
Gerard

Not USAF, but US Army... Army a/c hace an extra digit after the FY...
For example: 84-0158 must be 84-00158...
