Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L Topic

Reading all your posts, thank you for that, I realized that my pictures could be improved.
When looking at my pics from the last TLP, 1/3 were unsharp, although at shuuterspeeds between 1/800 and 1/1000.
As a test, today, I went to Volkel to take pictures with my 100-400mm lens but this time without the Tiffen Haze-1 filter.
I was impressed with the difference.

An italian viper at 400mm ISO125 T1/800 A8.0 --slightly blurred, but not due movement--


Dutch viper at 400 mm ISO160 T1/800 A8.0 --sharp!--


All pics are straight from the CFcard, some cropping but no sharpening and such! Also IS was on in mode2.

For the time being I will refrain from using my filter, but I have ordered a B&W 010M filter, which was recommanded at another forum.

Same here, I took off the filter last year after reading some posts on it. Unfortunatly weather hasn't been all that good to make some comparison shots. Plus I couldn't find the time.

And that's why I never ever ever use any kind of filter on my lens. I also use the 100-400 and they are almost allways sharp @ 400mm. Ofcourse I also make some mistakes and some pics are NOK, but who doesn't???? I prefer to take pics without a filter; pure nature xD

I had the same problem with the 100-400. The pictures were not sharp at 400 mm. When i removed the Hoya filter i was using the rate of sharp pictures went straight up!!

Now i am a very happy 100-400 user

A friend of my is working in a kind of technical research lab and did some research on my Hoya filter...
The filter was not completely straight...there was about 3 or 4 degree difference in the lens but enough to get unsharp pictures. It was almost not possible to see it with the naked eye. So....the manufacturing standards or quality controls at Hoya are not completely on the desired level.
So in this case was "goedkoop duurkoop".

I'm not a 100-400 owner, but think the topic is interesting enough. I was wondering: which brand/type of filter can be used without spoiling the quality of the pictures? (there should be one regardless of the price, right?)

What I miss in this topic is that there hasn't been mentioned that the 100-400 isn't a EF-S lens and therefore it's a full framer. Which meens that it ain't a 100-400mm for those who use a body that doesn't have a full frame sensor. Like a 50D or lower. So those who have multiple digit camera series are talking about a 160-640mm lens if your crop factor is 1,6, that is.

That is not correct. A 100-400 stays a 100-400. Even on a crop body...

Used that one for some years and was not satisfied with the final results. You'd better save some money for one of the L-lenses such as the 100-400 or the 70-200 4.0 or 2.8 version. Also the life endurance of the latter is much better then this Sigma lens which has a lot of plastic.

Iemand ervaring met de Tokina ??

Ik heb de Tokina 12-24, Deze lans is fantastisch.
Praktisch natuurlijk niet te vergelijken met een 80-400, maar die is ook uit de AT-X Pro serie.

Wel jammer dat er geen Stabilizer in zit.
