TEHRAN – A top general declared on Tuesday that the Iranian Air Force is seeking a return of fighter jets it bought from the U.S. in the 1970s.

The United States sold 80 F-14s to Iran in 1974. However, it refused to deliver them to Iran after the Islamic Revolution.

“We want to take back bombers (plural ) blocked by the U.S. because it is our legitimate right.

However, this issue must be pursued by relevant organizations through relevant channels,” Hossein Chitforoush, the Air Force Deputy Commander, told the Mehr News Agency

A top Iranian military officer says the nation's Air Force wants the United States to return seized Iranian fighter-bombers.

"We want our fighter-bombers back from the United States" because they belong to Iran, Iranian Deputy Air Force
Commander Brigadier General Hossein Chitforoush was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying on Tuesday.
He said the Islamic Republic of Iran has numerous claims from the world which will be put forward in due time.

Thirty-one years on since the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, the United States still holds Iran's frozen assets
and properties without paying Tehran anything in assets-related financial gains. On November 4, 1979, university students
captured the building of the US embassy and held 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days.
Ten days later, former US President Jimmy Carter issued an executive order, freezing all assets and properties of
the Iranian government, organizations and companies in the United States in response to the hostage-taking.

During the past 31 years, all US presidents have agreed to extend the order on frozen Iranian assets every year.

Iran and the US signed an agreement in 1981, known as the Algeria Declaration, which obliged Washington to remove
the freeze on Iran's assets, including capital, military equipment, diplomatic possessions and the money belonging to
the deposed shah of Iran and his family.
