Large photo: a World Cargo MD11 tipped over in Afghanistan

Post by Stratofreighter »

...but apart from the location Bagram AFB, and that it happened during offloading this late October/beginning of November, not much is known (for now :?: ) about this incident... :|

So the donkey has hit the stone twice as a Dutch proverb says... a while ago I've seen some pictures from a Korean Cargo MD11 with the same 'problem'

This happened before to the MD-11/DC-10 family. Is this aircraft so vulnerable to tipping over while being (un)loaded?

The center of gravity is behind the wing engines, around the center main landing gears and the tail engine does kick in extra loads on the rear ... if you mistake this and shoot something heavy to the rear inside you end up like this

Err, not trying to be pedantic, but aren't all CoG's behind the wing engines? AFAIK an MD-11 isn't more prone to tailstrikes than a B747 (which you would expect if the aircraft was more tail heavy than a B747), and the CoG movement while loading is roughly the same. I suspect that a simple mistake is the basis for the tipping over, not a basic error in the design of the MD-11...
