After 3 years of absence there was again an Oldtimer Treffen at Kirchheim unter Teck (OTT16), an airfield which is better known at Hahnweide.
According to the organizations list of aircraft, this year 351 participations were expected. After the event 311 participations (including some based aircraft) were counted which were good for some 900 movement during the three days.
On Friday 9 September most aircraft did arrive. The last one arrived on Sunday. There were some displays on Friday and on that day a single fly-past at medium height of eight Patrouille de France Alpha Jets was made.
They were in there way to another event. The Swiss Ju-52s and German An-2s did passenger sightseeing flights, they were fully booked for the three days.
During the weekend the gates opened early, before six in the morning you could already walk between the aircraft and meet the pilots. This could be done until 09:00 at which time everyone should be back behind the fences as the flying would start.
The flying lasted till after sunset. As the organization mentioned on their website OTT16 is not an airshow but a gathering of pilots and their aircraft. They will and cannot compete with airshows like La Ferté-Alais or Duxford which have well-choreographed flying displays and big formations of aircraft. But for those who were at Hahnweide (some 42.000 over three days) no one will complain about the volume and variety of aircraft on the ground and in the air. Hahnweide is not a very big airfield which means that at some point the aircraft were parked 3 rows deep along the public fence.
During all three days the sky was without any clouds and the temperature was above 30 Celsius. During the afternoon the sun will be opposite the crowed lines which made photographing tricky. You could go outside the airfield and for a spot with the sun in your back.
We have only listed the aircraft which fall under Scramble’s scoop (mainly warbirds, ex-military and the larger aircraft). Not all aircraft did land on the airfield, for example the CM170 and Me262 were flying only. The last visitors’ were on Sunday afternoon; P-38L Lighting N27Y and F4U-4 Corsair OE-EAS from the Red Bull Collection from Salzburg. They made a fly-by on their way home from an event in Belgium.
