Ramat David 2013

Ramat-David (Israel)

16 April 2013

The open day at Ramat David had a few surprises in store. Usually cars and coaches park on the grass at the northern
(Kibbutz Ramat David) entrance. This year we had to park on runway 15-33. This gave us a free tour over a part of the base
and the opportunity to see some additional F-16s in their
shelter areas. The four 110sq F-16s could be seen taxiing back to their shelters and even a few reasonable pictures could
be made...much to the annoyance of a (male) guard. Funny; a group of female guards did not care at all and seemed to
be more interested in their mobile phones. As the flypast was deemed to be overhead of the static, we picked a spot
on the south side of the parking. This proved to be the only correct choice, and all 22 aircraft were photographed without
problems. Unfortunately all were pretty high, and seven helicopters were cancelled due to high winds. Nevertheless,
this was the best Ramat David open day in the past 12+ years. Later in the afternoon we had a visit at Haifa which we barely
made as it took us at least an hour to leave Ramat David due to a classic bottleneck; compress a column of six cars wide to
a single file. Warning; arrive early to avoid the traffic jam to the base, and finish before the crowds become too large.
