Iwakuni is a base that is shared by the US Marine Corps and the JMSDF and 
has a north-south oriented runway. The Marines are based on the west side of 
the runway and the JMSDF use the east side. Every year on 5 May the Marines 
at MCAS Iwakuni hold the Friendship Festival. The static is situated on the 
main ramp and you stay on the west side of the runway. This means that in 
the morning the sun is on the other side of the runway, which results in poor 
photo conditions for the flying display. The flying display consisted of an 
AV-8B, a fly-by of two Japanese F-15s and a US-1A, a CAS-demo of two F-18s of 
VMFA-212, a demo of the F/A-18F and PACAF F-16, two small aerobatic aircraft 
and, as highlight for the Japanese people, the Blue Impulse.
