Army Day is celebrated as a national holiday in Poland on 15 August, usually with a military parade in Warsaw. This year, the parade was named Wielka Defilada Niepodległosci – the Great Independence Parade, as it was the main celebration of the 100th anniversary of Polish independence.
The military parade took place on the Wislostrada, on the west bank of the Vistula River in Warsaw, with the aircraft following the river from North to South. As could be expected, the parade was much larger than usual, although the aim of bringing 100 aircraft in the air was not met.
Unfortunately, both MiG-29s and Su-22s were absent following grounding of both types due to ejection seat issues. Four TY-coded F-22A Raptors were thrown into the line-up, after flying to Powidz from Spangdahlem on the eve of the parade. The entire spectacle was viewed from Stare Miasto (the old city).
