9 May 2015
Victory Day (in Russian “Den Pobedy”) or 9 May marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the part |
of the Second World War. Known in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War where the Soviet Union fought against |
Nazi Germany. It was first inaugurated in the sixteen republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the surrender |
document late in the evening on 8 May 1945 (after midnight, thus on 9 May, by Moscow Time). The Soviet government |
announced the victory early on 9 May after the signing ceremony in Berlin. Though the official inauguration |
happened in 1945 (which means it has been celebrated since 1946), the holiday became a non-labour day only in 1965 and |
only in some of the countries. |
This year the 70 years’ celebration of 9 May was organised on a big scale by the government of Russia. Of course the tensions |
with the west attributed to the show of force, especially on the military parades near the western ‘front’. Several flypasts |
including military aviation were organised: |
Moscow 150 aircraft |
Rostov 35 aircraft |
Sevastopol 25 aircraft |
Kaliningrad 15 aircraft |
Severomorsk 10 aircraft |
Vladivostok 10 aircraft |
In this article we zoom in on the large flypast over Red Square in Moscow. We have also received reports about the |
dress rehearsal on 7 May. In our report we did not include unit designations, as it is still very unclear which units have |
now referred back to their old regiments number and which units still stick with the Air Base/Air Group designation |
(AvB/AvGr), but we have included home bases of the aircraft involved as far as known. Also the base where the aircraft |
flew from are mentioned. We have decided not to include construction numbers, as these were not logged around this |
event, so some might be found on our message board and in our database. |
