Because?

I'm a bit surprised as well.
On one hand I like the looks of it it gives something different to spot from your standard C-130J but on the other hand:
So far a small fleet is operated/ordered world wide and not by our most frequent partners. And how is the aircraft technical support in the long run with a small fleet.
With more emphasis on Special Operations is the C-390 capable for that kind of work?
With the C-130 I would say good cooperation with the French and Germans was possible.
Also is air refueling of the helicopters possible with a (K)C-390? Now that the need for more range for the helis is needed, not sure this would be done by air refueling, but anyway.
I also read somewhere that the range compared to C-130 was not as good, is this not the case/problem anymore?

C-390 is cheaper, flies faster, greater range, higher paypload, so it is clear why it was always the favorite aircraft of 336sqn crew

Always thought they stood a chance but positively surprised they went for the C-390M. The aircraft has a commercial engine meaning reliable and easy to maintain and swop out. Embraer had a lot riding on this deal since Netherlands is on the NATO A-list in terms of profile so they will build on this for more European and ME sales.
Another plus for the Netherlands is the agreement Fokker Techniek has with Embraer so we might see deliveries modifications and maintenance, if there is anything left from the Portugal deal.
Thumbs up for Woensdrecht

The payload might be greater in terms of tonnage but a C-130J-30 can carry 1 more 463L pallet.

Higher payload? C-130J 21 tons, KC-390 19 tons…

With Hungary and Portugal three NATO members voted for the KC-390 now…

Yes, higher payload: Wikipedia and numerous other sources say 26 tonnes for the C390. And the C390's cargo hold is longer, higher and wider than that of the C-130J.

You mean these ugly overstretched C-130Js? I agree the C-390M is much more beautiful  Good choice :respect:

Good one. My bet is on reintroduction of the C-. It's been over 25 years by now that it has been used. It took D- only 11 years to be re-used.

And by the way: I would say the C390 is the best looking cargo aircraft on the market today. :P
So bring it on. Can't wait to see it in RNLAF colours... Or, more likely: shades of grey.

I'd put my bets on Alverca for that to be honest. Which means it is a good deal for me
But pleasantly surprised with this. Having seen a few here, I have gotten to like quite a lot. Good to see more non-Herculeses in the European sky!

I’m very surprised. I didn’t know Embraer got experience with military aircraft’s.
