NH90 NTH Sea Lion: Navy prepares SAR service takeover

Since the transfer of the SAR task to the new weapon system is not planned for a fixed date, no ceremony is to be expected.

For the interested public there is a good opportunity to find out more about the "Sea Lion"
as the successor to the veteran "Sea King" Mk41, Chief Boatswain Köbernick announced to rth.info:

As part of this year's GALILEO SAR Meet,
which takes place at the end of August 2023 in Nordholz with international participation,
the topic of capability transfer from Mk41 to NH90 is an essential part,
which is accordingly publicly acknowledged.


The Bundeswehr is known for effective and sometimes colorful special paintwork,
especially for anniversaries or "fly-in/fly-out" events.

The Navy said there would be no such special paint job for the transfer of skills.

However, the possibility of presenting a "Last Flight Mk41" livery is currently being evaluated.

However, that has not yet been decided –
the same applies to a possible special paint job
under the motto “175 Years of the Navy”,
for which the NH 90 comes into question.

besonders zu Jubiläen oder “Fly-In/Fly-Out“-Anlässen.

Zu dem Fähigkeitstransfer selbst werde es keine solche Sonderlackierung geben, teilte die Marine weiter mit.

SAR MEET 2023 – a meeting of helicopter operators included in the SAR system, which will take place in August or September at the Nordholz base in Germany. The aim of the meeting is to share experience and unify procedures for rescue operations within the SAR (Search and Rescue service). In June one of MFG 5’s last Sea King Mk.41 will be painted in special colours to be presented on the Spotter Day on August 27th.

A second Sea King will be painted in early-2024 for a planned flyout of the type at Nordholz in April/May 2024. At least one of them will get a full retro colourscheme as shown in the late-seventies/early-eighties or some kind of mixed paint like the LTG 63 Retrobrummel.

Of the fleet at least 89+50, 89+58, 89+61, 89+64 and 89+65 should still be active.
