LOG SW USA Trip day 6 (19-10-2022)

Post by patrick dirksen »

Hi all,

Today there were two Navy/Marines airbases on our list, starting with El Centro. We arrived early, so we would be able to read off the stuff on the platforms. The roads around the base were rather muddy and therefor tricky, but we managed to get to the right spot without problems.

We managed to read all codes of the Goshawks and Hornets, so that was a good start. And with these many aircraft present, we expected flying activities to be many as well. However to my disappointment (I never photographed an operational Goshawk yet) none of the T-45s ever moved. Only two days later we learned they were grounded because of some safety issues. A few Hornets did fly a morning mission though, and these could be photographed nicely.
Just before they came back we saw an Osprey flying past in the distance, turning in for Imperial. So a few of our group decided to try our luck and catch that, and we hurried to the airport.

We got the Osprey indeed just before it took off again after being refuelled, and the two civilian Kiowas were a nice bonus. These seem to be based here, as they were inside open sheds.
When the MV-22 was gone, we hurried back to El Centro, and arrived just in time to catch the Hornets during landing.

Not long after the Horets had returned, two twoships of F-35s arrived, doing a nice short landing. When a few of the Hornets had taken off for another mission and the F-35s had gone again, we saw another Osprey heading for Imperial. So off a few of us went again.

This one was already taxiing out again when we arrived, so we were just in time to shoot it during take off. We then headed back to El Centro, to watch the return of the second Hornet mission. As there was still no activity at the T-45s, we then decided it was time to move on.

While driving east this one crossed our path, flying over the desert. On pictures taken from the driving car the serial could be read. A very nice bonus, although we didn’t know yet we were going to see it again at our next stop.

What an afternoon! I had been here twice before, during an open day (nice) and once during a regular day (boring!). During a WTI it is completely different…. As we arrived around noon, we had troubles reading off the stuff on the ramps. As most of our group were photographers only anyway, I was the only one doing the reading. Many of the aircraft present were identified, but also many escaped, especially of the choppers. However with lots of flying activity under great circumstances, lots of nice photos were made as well, although I would have loved to graph one of those mighty CH-53s with the sun on the right side….
When the sun was getting lower, we had to move on, as we still had a long drive ahead of us. We would arrive rather late at our hotel anyway, and a few of us had to get up very early again next moring for our AMARG flight. But that is for tomorrows log.

That’s all folks!
