Florennes spotters day October 18

Florennes spotters day October 18
On Wednesday October 18 a spotters day was organized at Florennes airbase. Despite attempts by my friend and I the exact reason why remained unclear, but it was a well organized one and we had a good time.

It was indeed a nice day well organised.
The reason was a memorial for Jean de Selys-Longchamps if I'm not mistaken.
Your last photo is special. Were you allowed to go on the shelter?

Yes, that was one reason we learned. However, we spoke a member of RAF 3 Sqn and he told us a fuzzy story of a pilot who served with 3 Sqn flying Hawker Typhoons in 1943, while in the Florennes neighbourhood, who was killed in action.The reason was a memorial for Jean de Selys-Longchamps if I'm not mistaken.

Baron Jean de Selys-Longchamps was killed while landing his damaged Typhoon at Manston in 1943. Thanks Jimi, that detail escaped us, and now it makes more sense.He was flying with RAF 3 Squadron at that time.
