Arizona road trip Dec 2 2023
Hi Guys,
Took a trip with wife and I had the opportunity to visit 8 airports (6 new to me) in Arizona. First airport was Flagstaff FLG - absolutely nothing to report from there. The two biggest aircraft on the ramps were Hawker 800 and GV. I didn't take single picture (as in the morning everything is backlit).
From Flagstaff I hit Valle Airport 40G - There used to be nice museum but now is closed for good. Most of the exhibits were moved to Chino.
Valle Airport is located 20 minutes north of Williams, close to the Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim).
I was hoping to get my third Martin 404 but at the end I had to take Convair 240 which was also a nice catch. This is everything that was visible from outside the fence.

Third airport on our way was Grand Canyon National Park Airport GCN. It has three small terminals. One for Papillon Helicopters, one for Maverick Helicopters and one for fixed wing which is mostly used by Scenic Airways and their fleet of DHC-6 and C208.
Everything is easily shootable on the ramps.

The next stop was Phoenix Deer Valley Airport DVT with absolutely nothing interesting to photograph.
About 15 minutes down the road was Scottsdale Airport SDL, again only small stuff on the ramps so no photos.
From Scottsdale we've continued to Mesa Falcon Field MSC. On the east side you've got some kind of storage place with Albatross and few ex US Navy S-2. The gate was open but the signs plastered all over it made me skip the place. Only shot was taken from the car at the gate of Chalks G111. Next place was helicopter hangar area. The nicest thing that was there I couldn't photograph as it was parked right against the fence and the palm tree. It was Colombian National Police Bell still in full colors - reg and - rotor.
From there I went to the next row of hangars. Saw one with 2 Lockheed Harpoons parked outside + C-47 and Beech 18. I took my camera and went to knock on the hangar doors to ask for permission to shoot the C-47. The answer was "I can't let you in in the hangar..."
That was a big disappointment. He couldn't let me in because the hangar floor had so much =censored= inside? (not airplanes, but literally parts of the airplanes all over the floor). But graciously I've been given permission to shoot the planes from the fence. The only shot from the fence you can get is the backlit 3/4 angle of Harpoon in RAF colors. All other planes are blocked by one thing or another.
I've continued to the end of the road and saw another Harpoon parked at different location. Got it from the fence.
There were few other warbirds scattered on the field but unshootable without ramp access. This airport takes the cake for most spotter unfriendly airport in Arizona so far.

It's more fun if you go south of PHX. This is the first time in 15 years that I have ventured north out of PHX instead of south. It's because my wife wanted to go back to Grand Canyon
Arizona is great for spotting and photography. That's why I've been trying to get there once or twice a year over the years.

The next morning was time to fly back home via LAX. Spent an hour shooting from United's gates and I took some pictures from the aircraft seat.
In the distance Mesa Falcon Field
Overflying Chino Airport - I will have to go there one day. Looks like pretty cool airport with 2 museums and lots of hauls all over the place.

Very nice report, thanks for sharing!
I was in South Western USA this summer, road-tripping with the family. I also made stop at Flagstaff but was bit more lucky with a US Army MH-60 and 6 CH-53 of the Marines...
Regards, Anton.
