Whoa, I can only drool over all those Phantoms, Roel... And Dino's touch-down pics are awesome too. As a matter of fact, I'm enjoying all those old photos and judging by the number of views a lot of people here are dreaming back to 'the positive sides of the cold war'..!

Here's some more stuff of my very beginnings as a photographer of aircraft. By summer 1981 I was the proud owner of a Praktica MTL-3, initially with just a 50mm lens but soon stepping up to 100mm with a converter. Wow. As a result, these are all crops again, varying from considerable to extreme (which obviously reverses in the quality  ).

On 18jun81 I spent 40 minutes at the fence and saw three Broncos, three Eagles and two Belgian Starfighters depart.
Image

Exactly one week later, one hour at Soesterberg was enough to see a PA ANG EC-130 arrive, a Spanish C-130H depart and a third (MAC) Herc on the platform.

And on 31jul81 Camp New Amsterdam saw a change of commander, bringing more real stuff to the base.

I can't recall exactly how we did it, but I seem to remember taking the above pic involved using two converters. The viewfinder was so dark I could not really focus anymore.

A third visiting Phantom was this LORAN equipped Zweibrücken RF-4C:

Although I might be cheating a little bit (in my memory it was around 1990) I hope you like the F-3's.

And where the =censored= are the Broncos???? Gosh I love to see all these pictures. I started just in time to enjoy the great spotting place on the taxiway (from where most of the shots are taken), but too late to enjoy most of the birds shown here. But please, if you can, show those Broncos!

Hi Erwin,

Obviously, I would if I could! I'm going through my old films to locate any, but on the above day I only tried one F-104 shot with my 50mm on a grey day... They didn't taxi on the south side while I was there, you see.

With these two Holloman F-15's there is a funny story. They arrived at around 19.00 hrs when every spotter already left and only me and my friend were standing there. Next morning my friend told everybody two HO-Eagles had landed and nobody believed him! Until the pics came back from the store he could prove they realy were there! Since that day everybody keep calling him "Holloman" :D

WOW!!!
Thanks for posting these, great indeed! But can you tell me where they were based in those days? Obviously they are American, but I didn't know of them being stationed in Europe. And did they visit Soesterberg often?

In those days they were based at Sembach in Germany with the 704th TASS. They flew there from 1976 until 1985 and in that period it was a regular visitor to Soesterberg. First they were light grey and in the last 4 years they changed into the lizard camo.
