When Erwin started to spot, he was new and knew not so much as now. So we (the ''old'' guard'') called him the leerling, as he had to learn all about military aircraft spotting and taking him on trips to foreign countries and teach him all the tricks in climbing fences .
I believe the name comes from the comic ''De Generaal'' were the character ''ayatollah'' had a student.
By now I think ''the leerling'' knows more than me.....

To add to Lesley´s story, the nick name was appointed on a (for me famous) trip to Ribnitz Damgarten in 1992. My first ever intrusion into the raw power eastern block. Lesley, Dimitri and Ron had to explain me everything on the Russian stuff and put me to the test during a small incursion onto the Parchim helicopter platforms. Gosh was I scared when an Ural truck full of Russians stopped our car right beside those Hinds! And of course the flightline checking at Ribnitz. I think I should still have some pictures of Lesley hanging out of a dumped Il-28.....
Oh, those were the days.....
