I were there that day as well. What a day  This was the only Russian base in Germany I manged to visit airside and I was taken back by the flightline of 35+ Fitters all in one line. It was at Templin when 20th APIB tipped out in April 1994.
I remember is that a friendly dutch spotter borrowed me one of his spare 2CR5 batteries as I had a dodgy one that couldnt take the cold. I also remember a spotter being blown off his feet by jet blast as he was walking back towards the flightline just as a fighter jock decided to taxi out.

Amazing atmosphere in your MIG25-pics, Pieter. One can almost breath the icy circumstances of the cold war period. But that's only the landscape, not the people: the airmen are waving very friendly. 8)

Whoa good pics of the Mig 25's Pieter, I remember especially the camouflaged one was sought after in those days.

As for the Su 22's, that was indeed at Templin. For those who were not around in those days: The russians remained in the former DDR for some 4 years after the fall of the wall.
The soviet airbases were vacated one at the time. The day the aircraft were flown to the USSR, the base was open for the press.
There was a surprising interest from the Dutch press for the withdrawl. The russians were getting wise and were charging an entrence fee in the end.

some more from Templin

It was actually very cold that morning and the sun was behind clouds a lot of the time. Also we did not have a lot of time, all the aircraft were gone by 10 o'clock in the morning.
For photographers it was a free for all and people were lying on the runway while the Sukhoi's were taking off with full afterburner. Dino has two of those pictures in
another topic and Iwan should be able to show some of those aswell.

To stay with the topic, these were also flying around in the former DDR.

Not quite, We were actually supposed to be confined in a small area along a taxi way. People were not too happy with this and started to spread out along the taxiway. When spotters had spread out over an area of propaply 200 meters with the russian "guides" at the front, the rear started to walk across the taxiway towards the flightline. The guides hurried towards them screaming and waving thier arms but by doing so leaving spotters at the front unattended. Bad idea (for the russians) as they now also started crossing the taxiway. Soon there were smiling spotters everywhere with posing russian pilots and the Guides shrugged thier shoulders and dissappeared.

True  I myself also went to stand on the actual runway (at the edge though) while SU-22 in pairs blasted past me with full a/b  Great memories.

I love the pictures of this very rare camouflage :worship: . Less than 10 aircraft only had this camouflage scheme

I considered myself really lucky when I was able to visit Jordan and the Royal Jordanian Air Force in 1995. Anyway here a pic from the most beautiful fighterplane in the world, the F-5E, on the flightline of Al Jafr King Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz Air Base in Jordan not too far from the border with Saudi Aribia... and oh men what was it hot that day!!!
