The aircraft stayed for a few days and on September 30th , 1980 the tarmac at Schiphol-east was opened to the public for a few hours to take a closer look at the C-5 !
That should happen more often nowadays....

I may be mistaken , but shouldn't the date of 5-9-1966 read 5-8-1966 , Rob , because you stated that some others you posted before in this topic were photographed by you on the date last mentioned?

Furthermore another sceneric picture from early days at Schiphol : DC-3 G-AMPP of DANAIR-London , taken forty-three years ago , to be exact on 13-8-1966! :o

Flying Flea Builder wrote:In that days, all those very interesting planes were just as common as the nowadays 73,4,5,6 and 77's, Airbuses, Embraers etc. In about 30-40 years you'll have the same feelings when you see your (and other one's) 2008 pics.
That is correct. However, variety back then was greater though, not only in number of different types but foremost in number of airlines!

Today, variety in aircraft means different models of p.e. a B737, B767 or Bombardier/Canadair RJ. And, be honest, isn't the difference between an A319, 320 or 321 (beside its fuselage length) in fact practically none?

Furthermore, since major airlines started to base their timetable on a hub-system and marketing joint-ventures like Star Alliance, Sky Team and One World became operational, the variety in airlines decreased. Airlines that were regulars not even so long ago at AMS (SAA, Gulf Air, Thai International, Qantas, just to mention some) now fly to other airports in Europe where transit passengers can get a connecting flight, operated by their marketing partner. Others, most feeder/commuter airlines, no longer operate in their own c/s, but adapt the c/s of the airline they are operating for (LH CityLine, Air France Regional, KLM Cityhopper etc.)

Isn't there anything positive to mention? Oh yes there is, because fortunately the number of daily movements has dramatically increased since the late 60's/70's, albeit more of the same, we do get to see more.

Boy, do I love this hobby

P.S. very nice pictures gentleman!

My first visit to Schiphol was in July 1967. I don't remembermuch of it, but at least I can say I actually saw DC-3 PH-MAA!

Image

Yes, I'm the 3-years old boy looking at his mother...

At the same day my father took a picture of a Canadian Pacific DC-8

Image

And I found some pictures he made in 1954 at Schiphol:

I think it's a DC-3 landing there

A nice view of Schiphol in 1954:

Indeed a Dakota, landing on runway 32 (where Hangar 14 is now); the church in the back is at Bovenkerk.
The other one is a Convair 240/340/440 IMHO, landing on the same runway 32
Nice to see these nostalgic pictures, guys: keep them coming :!:

Very nice gentlemen!

My personal 'archives' don't go back that far, but maybe this is something, my first steps into aviation photography.

Schiphol, August 1987:

Air UK BAC 1-11 G-AXMU
Image

Balkan Cargo An-12B LZ-BAB
Image

And again some years later, January 2, 1991:

BMi DC9-30 G-PKBM
Image

Tranavia B737-200 PH-TVH
Image

Air UK BAe 146
Image

British Airways BAC 1-11 'County of Gwynedd' (anybody with a reg maybe?)
Image

An a picture taken from the panorama terrace to finish with.
