Use airfield name instead of ICAO code please!!??!!

Post by Felipe »

Hi here,

Just a suggestion..

Is it an option that people put the whole airfield name in the topic instead of the ICAO code??
i don´t think it should be neccesary to use google, when i want to know where the pic´s are made..

Hope people are sharing my objections, or am i the only one who´s bothering about this issue?!?

Thanx in advance!!

Felipe.

Although this is the wrong section for this topic, I fully agree. Some ICAO codes are pretty well known (EHAM, ETAR), but as soon as they're out of this region you'll have to open the topic or use google.

I agree, maybe I've done it myself on some occasions, but I really prefer the full name.

"Pretty well known in this region" is also subjective. This photography forum is used and viewed by quite a few people outside of the Netherlands, like Canada, Bolivia, the US, Italy, Spain, to mention a few. So an ICAO code that is well known in the Netherlands may be not be that well known in Spain...

I say, full names! (and add the ICAO if you must)

Stephan

It's no problem, it's only easier to see the name directly (and don't have to search for it).

One person who knows the name putting the name in the title (once).
Or 300 persons searching the name (many times).

I think it is a no brainer, and indeed it has been asked many times before.

I agree wholeheartedly. There is no need to use ICAO codes. The whole world is going crazy using abbreviations.

I for one do not have enough time to search through tons of emails trying to find the relevant ones, its a real pain.

I think some people are trying to be unnecessarily clever, we are not all pilots.... I do not say to my wife that I am goin shopping in Egun!

why not a simple Mildenhall date event....we can then ignore the irrelevant notices!!

Well, it's not a big thing to write down the full airbase/airport name... so why just do it from now on? :) Why not just change the forum-rules mods? It's clear a lot of people want a change!

I fully agree. Just use the airfield names so that people who do not speak "the lingo" can also enjoy.

I think it's just one of those typically spotter "hey-look-how-much-I-know-about-aviation" things to use ICAO codes.

Never noticed it before?

When you're standing with a group of spotters along a runway, there is ALWAYS one in the group who has to make sure that the others know that he knows a lot about aviation. Usually this is accomplished by using a lot of '"aviation lingo". These are usually the ones who never shut up. :)

And if you do want to use codes, why not using IATA codes instead of ICAO?
