Expedition Meiringen - The photographic challenge

Post by Iwan Bogels »

Hi guys,

This week Alfa Kilo and DAPPA joined forces during a Meiringen expedition. We had set ourselves several different goals, like snow photography, camera testing and finding different photographic angles at this well known airbase.

The first goal was easy, as Meiringen was covered in snow. Lots of it ! Unfortunately the Swiss equivalent of Piet Paulusma was wrong, and we did not have any sunshine this trip. Nevertheless we enjoyed finding the spots that we had in mind before we set out for Meiringen.

Below you will find the results of two relaxed days of fun at Meiringen. Day three did not produce any photos, as snow was just too heavy for decent flying operations. Thus we left early on Thursday, and had to take a different route than planned. The road from Meiringen to Alpnach required snow chains for our car, while on the previous day we drove up and down over a completely clean road.

I hope you will enjoy our photo selection as much as we enjoyed shooting it.

Cheers
Iwan Bögels (DAPPA)

 Nice expedition you had there!!

The pics could be better. The first one is awesome, for the others in my opinion the snow parts are too white. And the photos lack a bit of saturation. First goal is obviously achieved, third one not fully...
Thanx for showing!

I'd rather depict atmosphere and the 'heat of the moment' making a catchy photo than to reflect the real situation and real colours showing a boring photo.

Hi Spacedust,

I have never seen photos like photo 2 (taken from above during landing), and only saw something similar to photo 1 a few years ago. Or is it me who has just not seen enough photos from Meiringen?

Cheers,
Iwan

Hah, we were there on the same day :) (you have perhaps seen a big guy in a red coat, with a telephoto in camo). Unfortunately, after two years of great weather in January, the 2010's WEF ends up to be at most mediocre :(

If you're looking for more information about taking pictures in Meiringen, check out my article at airshow-reviews.com. Actually, after Wednesday's experience I may even add a bit or two ;)

Hi Muflon,

Too bad we didn't meet. And although I'm a big guy, I was not the one in the red coat.

Marcel and me were driving a black Skoda Octavia, end we bot had big white Canon lenses (without cover). We only spent a few minutes at the spotters parking, but most of the time we were on our own. I was the one with very short hair (almost bold) and wearing a brown jacket. Hopefully we can meet next time.

Thanks for sharing the link to your article. I will have a look at it later this weekend, but right now I have to go.

Cheers,
Iwan

Hi Iwan,

Always nice to see pictures from this base! I think I received pictures from my swiss friend from your day 3. F-5s indeed in heavy snow, but still flying like crazy (if I'm right 12 hornets and 8 tigers!).

Cheers,
Oz

Hi Iwan,

It was nice to meet you at Meiringen. Nice photo's, nice angles. I will return tomorrow. Be sure to keep an eye on the "this is how we work" topic. It is very well possible that I will post some nice ones over there
I've been there on monday night, tuesday, wednesday and friday afternoon. Today, on friday was quite bad actually. Lot's of snow and only a handfull of Tigers flying. They stopped flying around 3 o clock. I will post my pictures this weekend I guess.

Regards,

Marien

iwan,
i have to agree with a previous poster on the white's in your pictures, i find it strange no one else comments on this.

Nice to see you enjoy the endless possibilities of this field.
personally i got there when you left, and was unable to do some decent photography that day.a frustration nightshot of the runway and base.

can we expect some night shots from you?

by this time the WEF CAP F-18 diverted to Payerne; i was standing at a not-flying-base...

KT,

I really like your first night shot, top shot! Our night shots will follow tomorrow.

Nico, you know Meiringen, use you knowledge and imagination to find the spot... Next year a "Dappa - Alfakilo - Touchdown" trip?

Grtz,

Marcel
