Re: Your 'Arty-Farty' pics
I am sorry, for me it is not. It could be a good shot for let's say a journalistic item on aircraft spotting, but that's not what I would call arty-farty and I think it 's not what the person who started this topic intended. Just my 2 pennies. For my it is Arty Farty!

@Bas: in fact, it is what the starter of this topic had in mind: shots with a different angle/perspective, in where composition is most in focus.
However, I, myself, do agree with your comment. But this also goes for some pics from NustyR which in my opinion are not ArtyFarty, but "just" another (often surprising) view/perspective on the topic aviation photography. But i'd better stay out of this topic.... ... Enjoy for those who can! Don't wanna digg up that discussion again...

I'd rather depict atmosphere and the 'heat of the moment' making a catchy photo than to reflect the real situation and real colours showing a boring photo.

Just curious when people will start to copy your style of work (again).
Thanks for sharing,

But with all effort you have put together the last years you made it to get the most perfect shots. You exactly know where and when to go. You have a lot of experience already and we all see your quality is increasing by the day. And you even try out new locations for the best shot. I like your mentality like that way.
For me you have the best on this forum. You're not a planespotter, just a photographer, a real good one with the right gear, a lot of experience and a good knowledge of photographing.
Please keep posting these perfect shots

I was planning to post this pic on 'Engines shots', but chose 'Arty-Farty' instead...
You are looking at an interesting detail of an engine of a 194th FS (CA ANG) F-16 I saw during the 2005 Miramar airshow. Who says FOD like some screws don't mix with a jet engine?

Re: Your 'Arty-Farty' pics
Hi Iwan,
Uh... HDR??? Hmmm... I recently stumbled on a thread with that very same mysterious abbreviation and I was blown away by Mach Loop shots of sunny fighters against backgrounds. (Why did I only have rain and clouds in my full week Mach Loop ??) Some other people on that thread tried to ask what HDR means, but no answers were given, just some more stunning crisp sharp images were thrown at them.
Anyway, I must sink my theeth in that subject some time. I didn't browse through all of that threads pages. However, I can't see how my engine shot fits in with the pics on the HDR thread with regard to that technical trick. What would HDR do to my engine shot?

HDR means High Dynamic Range.
Your eyes can observe many more shades and contrast in a view than a regular single-shot photo (LDR) can capture. This is remarkably obvious during more extreme lighting conditions like backlight and high contrast situations. Then shady area's turn completely black and intensly lit area's show up without any detail left in it. Next to that the spectrum of colors just doesn't show as we see it.
If you have the opportunity to make multiple shots from the exact same scene, but each with different exposures, you will see that you can capture more information. In an underexposed shot the normally overexposed area's will show more detail, while in an overexposed shot the shady area's will regain their various shades. Now all you have to do is blend them all together, while showing just the best lit area's from each shot.
The best way to do this is to make 5 shots of the same scene, exposed at -2, -1, 0, +1 and +2 stops (for example!). Blend these shots together in specialised HDR software like Photomatix, and you will get yourself a much more richly coloured image (is this good english ?) than from a correctly exposed single-shot image.
As we don't always have the opportunity to make 3, 5 or even 7 differenlty exposed shots from the same scene, there is an alternative trick available. It does not work as good as described above, but it comes close. What you do is take a RAW-image and develop this shot at 3, 5 or 7 different exposures. Use these shots in the same way, and you will be able to create your own HDR.
Now it all seems so simple, but there's more to it than just blending. But this is where taste becomes a major factor, even more than with regular image post processing. Nevertheless it's a great thing to try, and can get you fantastic results.
Just to show you, I have included a (non Atry-Farty) shot of a Greek S-70A Aegean Hawk at Kotroni, which switshes between LDR and HDR images (e.g. between original and and blended images) every two seconds. Hope you like it. If you want to read more aboy HDR, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging
All the best,
Iwan

Hi Iwan,
a very nice way of showing the difference between normal and HDR. But to be honest: I like the normal version a lot more than the HDR one....

Re: Your 'Arty-Farty' pics
Thanks. And it's perfectly fine to like one photo better than the other. As said, with HDR it's all a matter of taste, and I'm just trying to find my own way / style.Basman wrote:a very nice way of showing the difference between normal and HDR.
