This picture has been taken at Saki AB. The Su-33 86 red has just been taken off and departed for Murmansk. This Su-33 belongs to the 2nd Squadron of the 279 KIAP.

I was indeed very lucky (and happy) to be in the Ukraine while the Russian Su33's and Su25UBK's were deployed here and all the pictures are taken from outside the base. Since military aviation photography in the Ukraine is officially forbidden, I had to be extremely careful. All around the base were guards posted to stop people wandering on the base and these guards limited movement dramatically. Wandering around active airbase for a prolonged time with several people is therefore not advisable.

During my stay I didn't stay more then 10-15 minutes at the base before leaving. When I shot the Mi14, the guy inside looked directly at me (see picture) and immediately spoke with the pilot. This was my queue to leave as fast as I could. I didn't return the next couple of days and this was my shortest stay here: 5 min.

Another problem in the Ukraine is the flying. I was told that Ukrainian bases are only active 2-3 times a month with about 3-4 aircraft flying missions. This may vary per base, but in essence they don't fly a lot. Planning a trip in advance with only flying bases is in my opinion extremely difficult if not impossible. I was there in total for 3 weeks on holliday and was very lucky with what I got.

On the same days that the Su33's and Su25UBK's left Saki, there was an exercise at Belbek with Su27's from the Ukrainian AF. They were flying here for 2 days during the morning and one day during the afternoon. I decided to skip the departing Russians at Saki and go there instead.
