100 years of USNavy - NAS North Island area 12 Feb.

Post by sovietjet »

According to the NAF El Centro PAO, the San Diego event on February 12 will feature a 300 aircraft flyby and will close down San Diego airspace for 20 minutes. No specifics on what kind of aircraft yet.

Hi,

USNavy documents still show a fly-pass of 150 a/c operating out of Miramar, El Centro and North Island, and indeed closing down a big part of the San Diego area but also bit longer then 20 min

ROUMOURS indicate that at least 2 carriers should be open for public: 1 "empty" (these will deploy to El Centro) and 1 "full".... but again, these are roumours!

Oscar

Latest on the USS Midway site quotes ' flypast of 150-200 vintage naval aircraft' plus helicopter displays and the Blue Angels' They do seem to be playing close to their chest for a major event that's 7 weeks away .

Latest from PA at El Centro is that flypast aircraft will use Brown Field Municipal airport in San Diego and Miramar only. I would assume vintage/warbird stuff at the former and fast jets at the latter ????????????????

Will the special paint schemed aircraft be on the ground at North Island or are some / all of them in the flypast?

Latest on US websites quote a static of 75 a/c, incl. examples of all the centenary marked a/c, plus a flypast of 190 a/c comprising 30 vintage types and the rest currently serving a/c ( USN , USMC and USCG ) including a ' complete carrier Air Wing ' In the bay should be USS Stennis and Pelileu ( ?) but whether they will have a/c embarked is unclear. Anyway , together with the North Island based a/c , it should make a reasonable day out !

Suffice to say the event was AWESOME. In addition to a superb static of all the special marked a/c ( marred for photos by the lack of barriers ) and the based a/c logged ( 50+ SH-60's, 90+ F-18's ) the flypast lasted 2 hours 20 mins. Still working out the serials /units etc but as a taster, in addition to the vintage stuff, comprised :

Blue Angels
1 x F-18/ 1 x T-38
1 x UH-1
2 x AV-8
2 x UH-1/ 2 x AH-1
1x C-130/ 2 x CH-53
2 x Osprey
2 x AV-8
4 x UH-1/4 x AH-1
8 x CH-53
1 x Citation/ 1 x UC-12
2 x C-130
12 x CH-46
2 x C-130
4 x AV-8
2 x F-18
1 x CN295
1 x HC-130
1 x Jet Ranger
3 x SH-60
2 x SH-60
2 x T-34C
2 x T-6
1 x T-39
2 x T-45
1 x S-3
1 x E-2
2 x C-2
1 x Gulf III
1 x P-3
1 x C-9
1 x E-8
3 x F-18
4 x F-18
2 x F-16N
2 x EA-6B
1 x EA-6B / 2 x FA-18G
4 x F-5E
4 x F -5F
4 x F-18
4 x F-18
and the finale a mile wide flypast of a 'complete carrier wing ' - I counted 31 F-18's , 2 x E-2 and 3 x EA-6B , all out Miramar

Some quick remarks;

E-8 must be E-6B

F-5's were ; 4 x F-5N and 3 x F-5N and 1 x F-5F

Off course there are more little typo's but this is what I saw.

Gaps ? What gaps ? That is an excellent list, thanks very much. I assume you were at Miramar for the launch ?I was there on the Friday but a little constrained as to access to the ramp but I will check if I recorded any of your queries.
It was possibly the best display I have seen in 50 years of spotting

No, I wasn't at Miramar, but photographed the flypast from the parking near the static at North Island. I found some pictures from the Miramar launch online, and was able to read about three-four extra serials from those pics.
