The French plane fired the first shot in Libya at 1645 GMT and destroyed its target, according to a military spokesman.
French planes also flew reconnaissance missions over "all Libyan territory", French military sources said earlier.
Around 20 French aircraft were involved in Saturday's operation, a defence ministry official told the Reuters news agency.

According to the Pentagon five countries opened their attack on Libya this saturday.
France, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy are the five countries involved.
The name of this operation is now called Operation Odyssey Dawn.
The first objectives are the anti aircraft positions around the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Misrata. Libyan states television reports that a fuel depot has been bombed.
About 25 allied naval vessels, three of them being US submarines, are part of the attack force.
