In 1990, Slovenia (which was an autonomous state Yugoslav federation) voted for independence from the rest of the federation (among other things, the independence was contemplated in the same constitution as the referendum). Independence had a reason essentially ethnic (like all the Balkan conflict) because the Slovenians felt and feel closer to Europe than to the Slavic world. 91 In the Slovenian Parliament declares the independence of Slovenia, and Serbia, which was both politically and militarily strong player in the federation, is strongly opposed, and after several threats he sent the army (JNA acronym for People's Armed yougoslavo ) to oppose the independence of Slovenia. The MLIT has been very weak action, have called 10 days of the war because it did not last long, and Slovenes (which were, however, the vast majority of the population of the territory and the military also found there) quickly took control of military bases and military resources. In addition, some neighbors were quick to recognize the new state by putting it under their wing (especially Germany and Austria) and making strong diplomatic pressure.
The Yugoslav found himself cornered and had to proceed to evacuate his troops also opened a diplomatic crisis with Italy because they wanted to leave the Yugoslav Slovenia passing through Trieste, which sparked a diplomatic and political very controversial, but is another story.
