Leeuwarden 2011 Getting there / Staying there
Thinking of attending Leeuwarden (after a really good visit to Gilze last year).
Can anybody tell me how far the railway station is to the base and whether or not there will be a bus transfer service in operation on the main show days?
Many thanks
Peter

There are always shuttle busses straight from the railway station on the show days. From past experience, it is only about 10 minutes by bus.

Hello to all,
I'm planning on attending the Leeuwarden Air Show and will be in Amsterdamn on the 16th and 17th. Can anyone tell me if I can take a train to the air show versus renting a car? If a train is available which city would I need to arrive into and then are there buses to the air show?
Thanks for all the help,
Trevor

Taking the train is quite easy, saves you the hazard of parking your car, usually at the end and the beginning of the days there are massive trafficjams (don't know specifically about Leeuwarden, but I've experienced it at Volkel and Gilze). If you want to take the train you have to go to station Leeuwarden. There are free buses to the base on that station. Train is not cheap however, back and forth from Amsterdam will cost you about 45 Euros.tbower40 wrote:Hello to all,

http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/ for train and other public transport timetables (I don't know where you're staying but you can just type your adress. For "To" select Trainstation, then type "Leeuwarden"). Buses will be running from Leeuwarden Railway station to the base. About a car, I remember before the turn of the century the traffic jams were already starting half way at the Afsluitdijk, and then it is still some way to go to Leeuwarden. Think I arrived at 10 or 11 o'clock.tbower40 wrote:Hello to all,

Regarding the main arrival Day from outside the base.
Are the Police likely to move everyone on?
Cheers Rich

According to announcements in local newspapers this is indeed the case. Whether police will indeed move on everyone near the approach isn't clear.wizard 51 wrote:Regarding the main arrival Day from outside the base.

In 2006 they did close off roads some days because of the US Navy Blue Angels, in 2008 they did not (really)...

It CAN be used for the train, but it's still possible to travel with a paper ticket (The trains will make the definite transition at some point during 2012). Take care if you use it for a train journey, the minimum amount of money still available at the card must be EUR 20,00 (so also when you start your return trip from Leeuwarden towards Amsterdam, you need that minimum amount at that time).topgun1984 wrote:I don't know if the cards are required for the entire journey to Leeuwarden aswell, but for transportation within Amsterdam it's an absolute must to have...
AFAIK the only reason why they did it in 2006 was because it was on the Blue Angels' demand/order. But the Blues will not be there this year.Stratofreighter wrote:In 2006 they did close off roads some days because of the US Navy Blue Angels, in 2008 they did not (really)...

Re: Leeuwarden 2011 16 & 17 september Opinions and chit chat
rumour is that they will close on the 24 side the parallel road for car parking as of monday, because spotters know that first participants will arrive on monday and they expect a lot of people allready from that day on (stupid thinking by officials, as only the thursday will be a busy day outside the base). You will not be allowed to cross the road to the west side, but on the east side there is still some room. They can't forbid you to walk there.
Don't know what will be happening on the 06 side, but expect that the spottershill and the road to it will be forbidden also from monday on.
As soon as the "noodverordening" is published in local newspapers i will let you know what exactly will be happening.

Why not park the car elsewhere and take the bike? That would seem to be the best option.

Re: Leeuwarden 2011 Getting there / Staying there
Can anyone recommend some good hotels in the Leeuwarden area that might be close to the railway station?
Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Or stay on a campingplace, like me.
