Ipad on spottingtrips

Hello all,

I am thinking of buying an Ipad. The main reason to do this is, is because of my work. The second reason is the possibility to use it during a spottingtrip as a backup for my camera.

Are there some people who are using the Ipad on a spottingtrip? If so, are there some really "must have" apps for a planespotter?

You say that you want to use it as a backup for your camera. In what way? With the camera function? Or as a storage device?

App-wise it depends on whether your interest is in civil aviation or military. There are some tools which show flightdata (like Plane Finder) which might be useful.

Are you planning to use it as a camera or as a harddisk drive? If you want to back-up your images, I have found a netbook a much better alternative:

- LARGER HARDDISK (250/320GB)
- MULTIPLE USB ports
- BUILT-IN CARDREADER
- STANDARD OS
- LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE OF AN Ipad!!

I agree with Bennie. Netbook is much more useful than an iPad during trips. The only positive things about the iPad are the weight and a fingerlicking good screen.

I did some tests with the Camera Connection Kit from Apple and that worked very well.
It imports the photos on the Ipad and when you connect your Ipad to your laptop/desktop, you can import them onto your pc.

I had a small netbook (10" Samsung thing), but I found it very slow to use. Yes, you have a lot of storage space that you don't have on the Ipad.
I have a MacBook Pro at home, but it's to big to fit in my camera bag. Maybe I will consider to buy a small netbook again.

I use a third generation iPad 16 gb in conjunction with a hyperdrive colorspace. A killer combination. Nice screen and speed from the iPad, and photostorage and iPad compatibility of the hyperdrive colorspace.
Batteries last longer also in comparison to the Apple MacBook I used to drag around.

Two more advantages for the Hyperdrive, iPad combo
1) You can charge the Hyperdrive Colorspace with the Apple iPad poweradapter using USB.
2) The Hyperdrive Colorspace will work with SSD drives also. So no moving parts. Being much safer

Kan je met een caedreadertje je fotos rechtstreeks inporteren in je iPad? Of moet dit via de pc en dan via iTunes?

I do.
Especially in hotels with free WIFI the iPad is a very useful tool. To check the route for the next day, locations etc. But also to check right away certain numbers you have read, which one you have already (I am busy getting my personal database on a webpage) and which ones you still need.
But I also use it to save pictures from Google Earth so I can use it as a driving tool (like a poor man's navigation device).

Besides photo storage is use my iPad for various other reasons on my trips.
Following software is installed
LightTrac: Enables me to track the position of the sun in any specific place, time and date in the world. Nice to see where to stand to make the best pictures. Especially handy for outside museums.
Goodreader for iPad: To store (externally on server space) and view various PDF documents regarding spottersplaces, etc.
Bento: To access my database containing all the books in my collection, when shopping
Filemaker Go 11: to view the extensive roadbooks for long trips. To see info on museums (opening hours, contacts, etc.)

Always handy to have access to these items when no internet is available.

ik gebruik mijn Ipad nu heel erg veel op spotterstrips. Wat ik doe is een Eye-Fi kaartje in mijn Canon en ik sync de foto's naar de Ipad via Direct-Mode (dus WiFi). Ik kan direct als ik aan het fotograferen ben kijken of de foto's goed zijn en 100% inzoomen op een groot scherm. Ik gebruik een applicatie shuttersnitch hiervoor. Je kan ook de foto's raten (1 tot 5 sterren) en dit dan weer syncen naar Lightroom zodat als je bezig bent geweest en je meestal toch wel tijd hebt voordat je de foto's in Lightroom zet. het scheelt weer tijd om uit te zoeken welke foto's je als eerste wil bewerken etc.
