Re: some old 80's pics of Soesterberg AB.
I scanned some of my slides yesterday, and now I can finally put in a small contribution to this wonderful topic of this dream airbase from the past:
19-10-1987, runway 09 in use, we heard jets landing from the West and they did NOT sound like F-15's...we heard the 'thump' of drag chutes, and to our surprise three RF-4C's of Zweibrücken's 38th TRS landed, one by one, on Soesterberg's characteristic black tar runway! Bathed in sunlight these guys came taxiing in: canopies opened, one arm hanging out the window, a big phat Phantom under their arses, two singing J-79's behind their backs....it doesn't get any cooler than that...!!! And I loved the lizard scheme when in full sun: the ultimate combat colors! What a great first day of our NS Tienertoer... I was 15 at the time.
68-0555/ZR RF-4C 38th TRS, 26th TRW
68-0554/ZR RF-4C 38th TRS, 26th TRW
I can't remember exactly, but judging by the maximum armament pack, this must have been an alpha- or practise scramble in progress; the Queen's Own took their air defence responsibility VERY seriously!! And I believe they were the only USAF unit that was integrated into the command structure of a foreign air force Wolfhounds forever!!

Help me keep this topic alive, post more!

two more scanned from photos. Both somewhere in 1985.
Re: some old 80's pics of Soesterberg AB.
Not exactly 80's but, like the base itself, also history now. The Portuguese A-7s, F-16s and Alpha Jets that made Soesterberg their home in June 1995.

Re: some old 80's pics of Soesterberg AB.
This is not from the 80's, but it is the last F-15C taking off from Soesterberg AFB:

I guess a F-15A in that case instead of a F-15C...

Not necessarily...if the last F-15 taking off from Soesterberg AB was a visiting Lakenheath F-15 it can still be a F-15C.Coati wrote:I guess a F-15A in that case instead of a F-15C...

Re: some old 80's pics of Soesterberg AB.
Hi I am new at this forum but I have been following it for many years now. I was born in Soest and spent many days at Soesterberg. I have some slides scanned and I will try to upload them in order to share them with you. They are of poor quality but I think they are unique.
On my 9th? birthday (1983) I was invited by my neighbour who was at that time air traffic controller at Soesterberg. He invited me for a base visit. Here are the pics. Enjoy!

Not the most beautifull shot, but it was taken on base from a riding car. Should have been in the mid-eighties.
And maybe it helps a bit to keep the topic alive.
