Belgian cuts due: A400M, NH90, F-16 bases threatened...

Post by Stratofreighter »

The next five years, Defence should save about 1.55 billion euros.

The military hospital in Neder-Over-Heembeek, the rescue helicopters in Koksijde and detoxification plant for shells in Poelcapelle may be partially or fully privatized.
"The question is whether we can the assignment of the remaining Seakings and their NH90 successors.

There are two options:.. Helikopterreddingen above sea outsource to a civilian firm or services invoiced to the citizens who are saved or their insurance company is now the service free of charge, unless there is a demonstrable error. "

The transportation of transplant organs between hospitals is a task that the helicopters are often run at the expense of Defence.

The risk is that Belgium must pay a price for his "disloyalty" to NATO.

The relocation of the SHAPE headquarters in Mons to Bonn and Warsaw is not excluded. It represents directly and indirectly 14,000 people.
Chievres Air Base...
Too much too large freighters

The savings provide a smaller army and no account is taken into account when ordering freighters in 2001.

Belgium then placed an order for seven high-tech Airbus A400M cargo aircraft to replace the C-130,
but account was then held with an army of 47,000 soldiers.

By the time the units are delivered - in 2020 - that is probably not a reality anymore. Reported that the VRT.

Not only are there too many and too large cargo planes ordered, and their use will be a much more expensive than predecessor C-130, are reports the VRT.

In addition, the probability that this term seems large, one or more barracks close the doors again.
The VRT quotes Bastogne, Ypres and Gravere, but the basis of Koksijde is also called.
Especially if they decide to outsource to the private sector. Out rescue operations in the North Sea

One air base
Lastly, there were experts on the VRT still understood that Defence might need to choose between the airbases Florennes and Bevekom,
where Belgian F-16s are based.

A replacement of outdated equipment is planned, which will also cost a substantial part of the budget.

Perhaps "great journalists". The VRT never even once mentioned "A400M", only "cargo aircraft', I had to add it myself...

Well some things could make sense.

- private company for SAR and transportation of organs. ( Part if not all of these costs come for the healthinsurance company's , so why spend defense budget on them )
- concentrate fighter ops at one base ( Kleine-Brogel ).
- outsourcing of (basic)flighttraining. ( I believe a european initiative is under investigation )
- The A-400M could perhaps be operated as a pool ( EATC ) or another such initiative. Besides, hasn't got the dutch transportfleet a osd of 2020 ?
- locate all helo's at one base ( Bevekom / Florennes or Koksijde ), such base would then only need infrastructure to support these assets ...

I think savings can be made for the air component. And in due course for the other components too ...

However on a side note; Wasn't it agreed during the last NATO-summit that countries would invest more in their defence ? Some 2 % of their BNP ?

Weren't the Belgian C130s initially part of an international pool aswell? 12 Hercs for such a small country without many overseas territories was (and is) a bit overdone.....

Bennie,

When the C-130s were ordered(1971) the Belgian military was much larger. these Hercs replaced 2 squadrons of C-119G-some 30 airplanes at the time.

A very very wise decision by the Belgians. Additional cuts is nothing wrong with. The Netherlands should follow and do the same.

You really should ignore his messages. Take a look at the messages he posted in the past. It seems to me that he is just looking for confrontations.

Gast obviously does not have his facts in line: our military hospital has since long been merged with AMC Utrecht , our helikopters are already centralised, SAR is outsourced and fighter have been discussed for centralizing On one base.
He is clearly not informed ....

As the news report still indicates 'possible budget cut plans' the subject has moved from Mil News to the Tattle Lounge. When real measures are announced a number of replies will move back to the news section.

And for the announced helicopter base reduction, this is already done as Koksijde is controlled from Bevekom/1w since September 2014 and has an Forward Operating Base status.

Pacifist and clearly not informed, hmmm, don't judge to fast guys. A few obvious examples which I can imagine this really will happen in the near future. The Netherlands still can (partially) outsource the maintenance of the Cougars for the time being the Cougar will fly. Same for the remaining CV90's. The coastguard tasks can be hand over civilian and will be the end of the Dorniers. So, finally the costs the Dutch MOD doesn't have to make can be spend to defense itself. So again, just some possibillities.

Yesterday it was confirmed that Koksijde will reduce size by 70%, but this was already discussed many years ago.
Maintenance of the NH90s are done centrally at Beauvechain, so they expect a personnel reduction by about 100 people.
All the rest is still to be decided, but some of the cutbacks would be quite logical. For example in Spa we have an army units of about 50 people (!), who literally only turns their fingers, so....

The irony of moving Belgium to the tattle lounge may be lost on some of our younger readers ...
