Mildenhall & Lakenheath
The (planned) future:
United Kingdom
Divest RAF Mildenhall:
• Returns the installation and four supported sites to the United Kingdom.
• DOD intends to relocate the operational units at RAF Mildenhall within Europe — the assigned KC-135s and the 352nd Special Operations Wing to Germany and the assigned RC-135s within the U.K. This paves the way for the stationing of two squadrons of F-35s at RAF Lakenheath, starting in 2020.
• Divest RAF Alconbury/RAF Molesworth — Consolidation of missions allows the permanent return of RAF Alconbury, RAF Molesworth and supporting sites to the United Kingdom. The majority of U.S. personnel, and many of the U.S.-funded host nation positions assigned to these bases will be transferred to RAF Croughton.

US: F-35s to Europe in 2020, Mildenhall closes
The US Air Force is planning to station two Lockheed Martin F-35 squadrons at RAF Lakenheath from 2020 on, according to statements released on Thursday 8 January. Furthermore, nearby Mildenhall airbase is to cease operations, with the local KC-135 tanker aircraft and special ops C-130s moving to Germany and other aircraft dispersed elsewhere in the UK.

Re: Mildenhall & Lakenheath
If this is implemented this will be the best possible Christmas present imaginable for Vladimir Putin.
Ironic that the Russian orthordox Christmas has only just happened in the last days.

Special OPS closer to Russia (but they were forward operated anyway), fighter-bombers still at the same place, tankers in Germany iso UK: nothing really changes, tactically, in the european theater?

What do you think about them being replaced by the F-35?Stratofreighter wrote:What / is something to happen to the 48th Wing F-15 Eagles when the F-35As move in at Lakenheath
I feel extremely sorry for our English friends as Mildenhall is a fantastic place, love to go there, but it would surely make Ramstein a much more interesting place!
Regards, Paul

Would mean pretty much work to do there ... Where ramstein has everything in place to support 10 extra C-130 and some CV-22. Article said, station them close to Stuttgart ...

352 SOG will be relocated to Spangdahlem.. So it is expect the KC-135s possible to Ramstein (as all the support is already in place here).
kind regards,

Spangdahlem now named as home for C-130s and CV-22, surprisingly. Could point to F-16s moving elsewhere.

The shelter area at Ramstein has recently been refurbished if I'm not mistaken....evhest wrote:Spangdahlem now named as home for C-130s and CV-22, surprisingly. Could point to F-16s moving elsewhere.
