Re: SHOOTING ON BASE-Gilze-Rijen 1973, 1974
"Erwin you could be right that by that time it were still GR1's and later became GR3 after their nose modification. I'm not that familiar with the variant of this type. Thanks for the remark!
Gerrit"
Gerrit,
It could be that your Harriers were actually GR.1A's. The 61 GR.1's build, received a new engine (Pegasus 10 Mk.102) after 1971 and their typedesignation changed to GR.1A. Externally there were no differences between the two types (source: Scramble wiki).
Please keep posting your pics and stories from the old days: they are a feast to study and read!

A lesson learned for me then. Anyway, it being 0 or O, it is no part of the actual registration, just a representation on the tail (the USAF has many variations on serial presentation, as we know).
I think the "O for Obsolete"-story was widespread indeed, it was even included in a US serial system introductory text in the well-respected Military Aircraft Markings. At least it was in the 1987 edition I still have

You're right, there! 80's Scramble Magazine...epic.... FUN to read, and in correct Dutch instead of "Louis van Gaal"-English...those were the days...
(Not that today's effort is not appreciated.... My money for next year is on the way!)

Edit: My initial impression of your post was that it was sarcastic.... Now I'm thinking you actually meant it positively...

Re: SHOOTING ON BASE-Gilze-Rijen Seventies...
Not being based at EHGR anymore I did not frequently visit the aerodrome. From MilATCC I monitored all the bases for interesting visitors. But must of the time the distance was an obstacle for a quick visit. So when doing training at the ATC-school at Gilze or was there for medical check ups I Always made a quick tour around the base... In the distance I saw a CH34 parked at the beginning rwy 28 but going there was not easy. But via the southern circular road, passing DVM and the flying club (nice 'Typhoons' standing outside) crossed beginning rwy 20 and via the woods in the south-east I could finally shoot the helicopter with nice sun in my back. You can imagine I also took the Harvards on the way back!
