Aircraft Classification rules

Guys,

I am trying to find proper (military) aircraft classification rules, clarifying (for example) the difference between 'Ground attack', 'Strike', 'Interdictor' etc. These lines can be blurry, change from time to time and can vary slightly for different countries. The objective is to improve the scramble wiki Aircraft Mission section.

So far I didn't find proper (or formal) classification rules, apart from some broad definitions provided by Wikipedia. There must be formal (US, UK, NATO ) classification rules. Anyone on this?

I've been looking for such a qualification for some years now, but haven't found one yet....

You clearly spent time in getting to a good general description of the mission type! So make sure you add Global Hawk to the examples (as SR-71 will only be something 'us dinosaurs' will appreciate, and the drones are really here to stay), just like other UAVs, and do add a couple of soviet, Chinese and European examples? On top of that, the MiG-31 is still in service, and as it's a pretty single mission aircraft, I'd say the term "Interceptor" is not 'disused'...

But again, I think I'd go with your list of descriptions, nicely done.

Thanks, you're quite right about the UAV/UCAV's.
It will probably result is some new classifications, for example to classify miniature 'infantry recon support' miniature drones.
And, I agree to add some European, Soviet/Russian and Chinese examples.
