Army taps Fort Hood aviation unit for Europe deployment
The Fort Hood, Texas-based 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division
will send 1,700 soldiers to Europe later this fall
to maintain a steady presence of Army airpower on the Continent.
“Air Cav troopers are trained and ready to showcase our dynamic aviation capabilities through multinational exercises with our NATO allies and partner nations,” brigade commander Col. Phillip C. Baker said in a statement on Wednesday.
The unit will replace the 10th Mountain Division’s 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, which has been deployed to Europe since February.
It has conducted operations along NATO’s eastern flank with 50 Black Hawks, 10 tandem-rotor Chinook helicopters and a supplement of Apache attack helicopters from a Fort Bliss aviation battalion.
The 10th CAB’s arrival in Europe came just after to the deployment of a heavy brigade, which arrived in January.
The moves were part of an Army effort to ensure a “heel-to-toe,” year-round presence of tank and aviation brigades in Europe,
where the military was sharply downsized after decades of drawdown.
The 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, is set to conclude its tour in the coming weeks as it hands off its mission to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley, Kan.
The incoming brigade will bring tanks, trucks and other equipment, which will arrive in Germany and Poland by mid-September.
Rotational ground and aviation troops in Poland and the Baltics are a core component of the U.S. Army in Europe’s Operation Atlantic Resolve — the mission to reassure allies worried about a resurgent Russia.

For those of you not completely mastering the French language: the 70 helicopters of the unit (I think you can pick up the three types from the news clipping ) are to arrive at the port of Zeebrugge on the 19th of october, after which they will fly to Chièvres before moving on to their final destinations. The current deployment unit is to return to the CONUS after the 1st CAB is in place, somewhere in november.

89 in total, but likely the helicopters for Romania, Latvia and Poland will be 'delivered' directly by airfreight.

I think you are right, some helicopters wil also be deliverd by airfreight in Brussels. On the ARC Shipping page I can only find that the Endurance will arrive 16th & 21th october, instead of 19th october?cis wrote:89 in total, but likely the helicopters for Romania, Latvia and Poland will be 'delivered' directly by airfreight.

I don’t expect much to be flown in through Brussels. Saw some pics from the harbour in Texas, and with the helicopters flown in to Latvia, Romania and Poland, it pretty well adds up to the ones being expected in Zeebrugge.
Brussels might be used to fly in some aircrews to fly them out of Zeebrugge.

The Endurance (departed Corpus Christi) will arrive today. So I would say they are a few days earlier than 19th October?
Also I'm wondering where the 10th CAB will depart from back to CONUS..

According to the ARC Shipping schedule, Endurance will offload in 2 different locations in Zeebrugge, first one looks like civilian cargo, 2nd location is military cargo. So the 19th still seems to be correct

Both Endurance and Patriot (both ARC shipping vehicles carriers) are now at the beginning of the Zuidelijke Insteekdok (acc marinetraffic).

The Patriot will leave Zeebrugge tomorrow. So if he has some choppers, some shall be outside this afternoon.. But I put my money on the Endurance.arrecoos wrote:Both Endurance and Patriot (both ARC shipping vehicles carriers) are now at the beginning of the Zuidelijke Insteekdok (acc marinetraffic).

Unlikely the Patriot has something to do with the US Army helicopters, ship came from Bremerhaven, and through Southampton back to USA.
