Etampes (F) 1992 - Tunisian Texans

Post by Stephan Lodewijks »

Can anyone help with this?

Me and friends noted three ex-Tunisian Air Force T-6 Texan-wrecks at Etampes in France on 26SEP1992. I seem to remember they were metal-colored with partly faded Tunisian national insignia. We noted '161305' and '121619' that day, along with (at least?) one unidentified one. I have ex-US serial 51-14720 as tie-up with 161305, but now, 20+ years later, I can't find any info on this. Does anyone know more about these wrecks?

Thanks in advance!

I now found that 161305 should be Y61-305, ex RMorocAF, which would later become F-AZJI. I don't really understand my Tunisia versus RMAF confusion, although a websites states that the airframe is ex-RMAF, but was recovered to France from Tunisia...this can hardly be a coincidence. Interesting!

Still interested in the other two, though!

Scramble database Tunesia says:

Y61-505 TK T-6G to F-AZJI To Civil 21oct96 jun97 w/o 07-06-1997 as F-AZJI 51-14720?

So that might be your answer to that particular aircraft.

No immediate answers on other queries, Bu No 121619 isn't a T-6, and 41-21619 isn't a T-6, 51-21619 does not exist.

European Wrecks and Relics v2 (the first by Otger van der Kooij) does not mention any T-6'es at Etampes. Interestingly the 3rd edition DOES mention only the T-6 listed above as l/n 9-94. No other T-6'es are mentioned. Other aircraft mentioned are a couple of N-1101's (serials 23 (l/n 9-98), 87 (l/n 6-97) and 106 (l/n 6-90)) and a N-3202 (serial 30 (l/n 6-90)).

Nothing further.

Hi,

Was there myself as well. Remember having seen, and photographed, those outside, and also one (?) inside.

Have in my records:
49-2983/Y-61501 F-AZVN
51-14385/Y-61xxx F-AZOU (reservation)
51-14720/Y-61505 F-AZJI (crashed)
51-14728/Y-61xxx in Krakow as "49-2983"

Regards,

Benno

Thanks all!

Benno, how should I interpret your list of four with regard to the one you saw inside? :-)

Thanks in advance,

That is weird, cause I also found on other websites (and read off myself) Y61-305....so the plot thickens...
